Context: Feature X

You are a part of the product/design team at Clubhouse.

The last year has been quite an interesting one: you, along with your teammates were able to create a completely new way of interacting socially, online, via live audio-chats.

The last few months have also been quite hectic, with the team growing and focussed on scaling the infrastructure and fixing issues. All this, in the run up to opening the app for the general public: lots of fixes, minor enhancements. A lot of work, but a lot of fun.

But something strange happened during the all hands meet, this morning: senior management was clearly concerned about the launch of competing products from Twitter, FB and others.

So, to take on the competition, they’ve created a secret, skunkworks team of sorts, that will work on what they call Project X. And you have been drafted into it.

You’ve been given one simple task: To find a differentiating feature that can help fend of competition and more importantly, attract new users, while continuing to retain existing ones.

Essentially you need to come up with a Feature X than can define, or rather redefine, Clubhouse. And you need to have your initial set of ideas ready for the Monday morning pitch to senior management.

Management is looking for 1 key idea, with a clear justification on why it should be picked.

Bear in mind, management wants it to be a product focussed idea: so stay far away from suggesting things like community building, marketing etc. There are other departments working on that.

You have to focus only on the product (Your line manager has suggested you add such non product ideas at the end of your deck, just in case)

Also, management would be glad to have a few back up ideas too from you, just incase.

You have till Monday, all the best!

Note:

  • Management will share a few interesting articles, notes and documents that they have been able to find. You can check them here, from time to time(login to access them)
  • They are also doing a quick QnA session tomorrow, make sure you join in and get your doubts answered
  • It is learnt that management favours revolutionary rather evolutionary ideas: so don’t hold back. The crazier the better: who knows they might just love it
