Deloitte Studios | Business Experience Designer

Who are we?

Deloitte Studios is a full-service creative group within Deloitte Digital. We are a collection of artists, analysts, strategists, engineers, writers, makers, business-builders, designers, and dreamers. An agency that, coupled with the power of Deloitte Digital, combines creativity and technology to tell new stories in new ways.

We are proud of the culture we have built at Deloitte Studios. We've created a flat workplace, where the best idea always wins. We continue to focus on creating a great workplace for everyone; a place where everyone is encouraged to bring their best selves to work. You may check this article out for a peek into our pursuit to create a differentiated work culture.

What do we do?

We work with clients around the world and across industries. Besides solving complex problems for our clients, we are focused on building a ‘maker culture’ with a bias towards experimentation. We provide our teams with ample opportunities to tinker with ideas and give them the space to innovate.

Our take on product management

Our product practice lives at the intersection of digital experiences and consulting. We emphasize on creation of the culture, the craft, and the community that defines our engagement with the clients to focus on the "why" behind the efforts in addition to the "how". A significant amount of work that we do oscillates between two key questions:

Are we building the right product?

Are we building the product right?

You may read our detailed take on this topic published on the UX Collective here.

As an extension, we believe product management is an interdisciplinary craft rooted in the pursuit of elevating the human experience. Whether you are defining a business strategy, envisioning a brand definition, writing a policy document, designing a mobile app, or writing a piece of code — if you use your craft to create something from scratch, then you are applying underlying principles of design to make an impact. The Business Experience Designer role is the glue that holds our efforts together in this mission.

A shared appreciation for a good design, irrespective of whether it is in code or in colour or in characters, to do what’s right for the user by creating high-quality experiences should be a true north across teams.

About the Business Experience Designer (BXD)

The Business Experience Designer (BXD) is a product management role that integrates our strengths in professional services with product thinking principles to create differentiated solutions. The BXDs work at the intersection of design, engineering, and business to deliver experience-first digital solutions.

We realize that the product management role takes upon various colors and flavors and often job descriptions can become ambiguous. For your clarity, here are a few sample questions BXDs pursue answers to as part of their role depending on the stage of the product:

  • What is the problem we are trying to solve? For whom?
  • Why does this matter? Why now? How do we measure success?
  • How do we translate the product strategy into a body of work to be accomplished by a team of researchers, designers, and engineers?
  • How does that work get organized over a dependency-driven product roadmap?
  • How do we prioritize and take ideas through conception, hypothesis, research, insights, design, and engineering in a predictable, repeatable, and iterative workflow?
  • Are we able to iteratively build something of value?
  • How do we use customer feedback for making incremental improvements?

Check out this article for a longer list of questions. Also, here's our shot at describing what a "Minimum Viable Product" for a role in product management should look like.

Whom are we looking for?

Most of our BXDs have grown in either design, engineering, or industry roles before pursuing a career in product management. We are looking for curious and innovative people, who enjoy solving complex problems, love collaborating and learning from a mix of people with different skills, backgrounds, and perspectives. If you have an interesting or unusual mix of skills yourself, even better. We’re expanding fast, so we’re looking for natural initiative-takers who have a healthy skepticism for best practices, who bring out the best in themselves & others, be brilliant listeners, and help us grow our business without compromising standards, integrity or culture.

You may check out a sample of our work here. Through a combination of an irrational focus on the user, applying product thinking principles, and pursuing business innovation, you will be crafting and delivering digital experiences for our client's customers, employees, and business partners.

FAQs

How does one transition into a career in product management?

We believe effective product managers are product makers first. Check out this post and accompanying the deck to go through our suggestions to elevate your skills in product management.

If someone is a Product Manager would it be a step down to BXD?

Only you can most objectively determine that. There is a wide spectrum of roles in the industry that fit under the title of "product manager". Our community is rooted in the notion that the craft > title. Whether you pursue your interest in BXD or otherwise, we strongly recommend overriding the title with the opportunity to make an impact with the role you seek.

Why do companies prefer outsourcing to Deloitte over having in-house product teams?

Every product has a story. Our interviewers would be happy to share more context on why their client decided to collaborate with Deloitte. Having said that, in the long run, it matters less what services we are selling to our clients. Whatever that is, it is a means to an end. We believe that clients don’t work with consultants, people work with people. The brand on your visiting card can only take you so far in building relationships with your clients. When a client inks their signature on a contract, it is, in fact, a testimonial of the trust between the people sitting across the table.
